Tibbitt to Contwoyto

In the remote wilderness of the Canadian Arctic lies a treacherous lifeline that connects isolated communities and serves as a testament to human resilience—the Tibbitt to Contwoyto ice road. Stretching over an astonishing 600 kilometers from the Northwest Territories into Nunavut, this legendary route stands as one of the world‘s longest and most perilous heavy haul ice roads.

The winter road begins in YellowKnife, Northwest Territories and ends at the Jericho mine in Nunavut. The road mostly connects mines and exploration sites, supplying their fuel and supplies.

A Gauntlet of Ice

The Tibbitt to Contwoyto ice road is not for the faint-hearted. Carrying a staggering 250,000 tons of cargo annually, this frozen artery tests the limits of both man and machine. With bone-chilling temperatures plunging below -45 °C and 85% of the road traversing the frozen expanses of deep lakes, it presents an unforgiving and unpredictable challenge. Every mile is fraught with danger, demanding unwavering focus and skill from the ice road truckers who navigate its icy twists and turns.

Capturing the Unforgiving Beauty

Amidst the harsh conditions and formidable obstacles, there exists an eerie beauty that only the Arctic landscape can provide. Ben Perry went on this journey to document, as an intrepid observer, the snow-covered ice roads, and majestic mountain ranges. The desolate expanse, where the silence is interrupted only by the roar of engines. This backdrop creates a sense of awe and respect for the unforgiving environment these brave individuals traverse.

The Faces of Courage

At the heart of this treacherous journey are the ice road truckers themselves, Ben gets to meet the unsung heroes who transport essential supplies to remote communities. Their stories unfold, as they describe how they navigate the icy domain, defying the biting cold, the blinding snowstorms, and the ever-present danger of treacherous ice. Ben captures the determination etched upon their faces, the unwavering spirit that fuels their journeys, and the camaraderie that binds them together in their shared unusual pursuit.

Ben confronts the elements

Documenting life on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto ice road means Ben must embrace the harsh realities that a traveller has to face. It is a realm where survival hinges on meticulous preparation, and constant vigilance. Icy winds cut through clothing, testing the limits of endurance, while the constant threat of breaking through the frozen surface keeps hearts pounding. Through photographs and personal accounts, Ben manages to gain an intimate understanding of the dangers faced by these intrepid and individual souls.
